Truer words were never spoken than those in the quote ‘Life is not a dress rehearsal’ attributed to Rose Tremain!
But what exactly does it mean?
Taking this quote on its surface it means that we are here on earth for what amounts to an extremely short period of time in the overall scheme of things.
That said, we should strive each and every day to do what makes us the happiest so that when looking back 20, 30 40 or 60 years from now there will be absolutely no regrets.
Of course this idealistic look at things is easier said than done as each of our days are filled with needs and responsibilities that may not allow us the latitude or luxury to ‘do what we want to do’.
I have known people who suffered near-death illnesses and, after recovery, have pledged to ‘not sweat the small stuff’ and then unfortunately soon came to realize (or remember) that our lives are a compilation of small stuff that needs to be dealt with or we will suffer consequences that may be extremely negative.
So what is it that brings me to this philosophical introspection on a Thursday during a workday using a business oriented website as the venue when much needs to be done in the running of my business?
Perhaps the photo above provides my reasoning but if not, here it is…
It was a story that I woke up to this morning that once again made me realize how precious life is and that we have no idea when it will be changed forever or ended completely.
It concerns Bob Simon of 60 Minutes for whom death came swiftly and unexpectedly in a New York City town car for hire which, for anyone not from the area, is always a thought when riding in one.
And while Bob Simon is famous and his story will be told and heard all over the world, the same type of catastrophe that befell him will occur thousands of time to nameless and faceless individuals whose story will not be heard by anyone other than by those closest to them!
The takeaway? Your life is not a dress rehearsal and through all of the noise, or more likely despite it, try and live each of your days in such a way that when you look back you can say that you have no regrets.
Easier said than done but undoubtedly worth the effort!
