As a former equity and bond trader, charts proved a useful tool for looking at the past performance of a financial asset and then using that as a guide for trying to extrapolate an educated prediction of future performance!
Some market participants use what is known as technical analysis and rely solely on charts for their decision-making, while for others like myself they were only one of many tools.
That said, looking back at the performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average for the first three months of 2008 and then comparing it to the first three months of 2015, we may be receiving a signal of turbulent and down markets ahead.
Now, much like it was then, we are witnessing increased volatility but a market that for the most part has gone nowhere.
