For a prospective renter of an apartment in NYC, knowing the quality of the landlord is one more metric to consider when making a decision about where to live!
But the question is, how do they do that? Here’s some help!
NYC Government Oversight
The Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPB) will, among other mandates, ‘respond to resident complaints and referrals to identify and remediate problems with the quality or safety of buildings.’
Similarly the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) ‘regulates the lawful use of over one million buildings and construction sites across the five boroughs.’
In a September article titled, ‘Rentlogic, A Ratings Site To Critique Residential Landlords In NYC, Hits A Roadblock!‘, the firm designed to provide letter grades to landlords so that potential renters would be aware of any issues BEFORE signing a lease was highlighted.
Not surprisingly the concept received a good deal of pushback from landlords who were not necessarily fans of the transparency that Rentlogic provides.
